9 Things Every Pittie Parent Wishes You’d Stop Saying

Pit Bull parents are all too familiar with the stereotypes and misconceptions surrounding their beloved pets. Despite their loyal and loving nature, Pit Bulls often face criticism based on myths and misinformation. Here are nine things that Pit Bull parents are tired of hearing, and wish more people understood about their four-legged family members:

1. “Pit Bulls Are Naturally Aggressive”

This is perhaps the most common myth. Like any breed, Pit Bulls’ behavior depends more on their upbringing, training, and individual personality than their breed. Responsible owners know that with proper socialization and training, Pit Bulls can be as gentle and friendly as any other dog.

2. “They Don’t Make Safe Family Pets”

Pit Bull parents often hear doubts about the safety of these dogs around children. In reality, many Pit Bulls are excellent with kids, known for their patience and protective nature.

3. “They’re All Fighting Dogs”

This misconception is rooted in a dark history where some were unfortunately bred and used for fighting. Today’s Pit Bulls are far removed from these practices, and most are loving, peaceful pets.

4. “Pit Bulls Are Unpredictable”

The belief that Pit Bulls are unpredictably aggressive is another stereotype. With proper training and socialization, they are no more unpredictable than any other dog.

 5. “They’re Hard to Train”

Pit Bulls are actually known for their intelligence and eagerness to please, which makes them quite trainable. They often excel in obedience and agility training.

6. “They Don’t Get Along With Other Pets”

Pit Bulls can coexist peacefully with other pets, especially when raised together or properly introduced at a young age.

7. “Pit Bulls require intense exercise.”

While Pit Bulls are active dogs, they don’t necessarily require excessive exercise. Moderate daily exercise such as walks, playtime, and mental stimulation is usually sufficient to keep them happy and healthy.

8. “They’re always so hyper!”

Pit Bulls have an enthusiastic and energetic personality, but they are also capable of being calm and relaxed when in a familiar and comfortable environment. Proper exercise, stimulation, and routine can help maintain their calmness.

9. “They’re just a status symbol.”

This statement could not be further from the truth. Pit Bull parents appreciate these dogs for their loyalty, affection, and unwavering love. Owning a Pit Bull is about companionship, not a status symbol.

Edda Reynolds

Edda's journey into pet ownership began with a rescue dog that was deeply fearful of humans. To better support her first dog, Edda immersed herself in Canine Behavior Psychology. When her cherished companion passed away at 16, she chose to adopt a Pit Bull mix from a shelter. This new dog, Toffee, was not only affectionate towards people but also showed a keen aptitude for dog agility. Toffee introduced Edda to the strength and gentleness of Pit Bull-type breeds, sparking a deep love for them. This led Edda to welcome Runa, a Blue Staffordshire Bull Terrier puppy, into her family, providing Toffee with an ideal companion for play and companionship.
