American Staffordshire Terrier Colors [All 18 Amstaff Colors]

The American Kennel Club (AKC) has a detailed record of all the known coats each breed can have because colors and markings are some traits that make a purebred dog unique. This is because Amstaff colors are more than just an aspect of their distinct appearance. It provides a window into their ancestry.

I think there isn’t a dog breed with a wider variety of colors. Everybody can find their choice of color. This opportunity dramatically enhances the breed’s appeal because, with this much variety, there’s a color to match all tastes.

Both single colors and numerous color combinations are available for the AmStaff. Most white specks or patches are visible with a solid hue like black or blue. The American Staffordshire terrier, usually referred to as the Amstaff or Staffy, comes in a wide range of coat colors (eighteen).  A litter of American Staffordshire puppies can come in various colors, such as liver, seal brown, and many others, in addition to black brindle and fawn sable.

Most Common Amstaff Colors:

Blue American Staffy

In truth, a blue coat is more of a gray color, although there is a bluish tint to it, especially in the deeper shades of blue. These dogs frequently also have blue noses. Blue Staffies can also be brindles and tan points.

How Do You Get a Blue Amstaff?

Genetics is the reason your Staffy has a blue coat. A recessive gene for a black coat causes blue coats in AmStaffs and many other purebred dogs. It’s not a prerequisite for your Staffy’s parents to have blue coats, but they must both carry the recessive gene.

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier is one of several bull and terrier breeds with blue coloring.

Amstaff Brindle

This coat is a distinctive primary brindle color with some fawn and red shades. The colors are uniform throughout the coat, which is why it’s only called brindle.

How Do You Get a Brindle Amstaff?

To be brindle, dogs must possess the Agouti (a) gene plus the brindle gene (k). The combination of the two results in this fantastic coat color.

Agouti genes have different variations:

  • Tan points
  • Recessive black
  • Wolf gray
  • Sable

Different color combinations will also depend on which (a) mixes with which (k) gene.

Black American Staffordshire Terrier

Staffies have pure black coats and eyes that are almost black. Because there is only black present—no tan tips or other shading—you can tell the color is authentic black.

How Do You Get A Black Amstaff?

Three genes—B for black pigmentation, D for dense coloration, and C for full-color—must be present in a Staffy for it to appear black. All these genes are dominant.

White American Staffy

The white, or any mix of white and other colors, is definite. Dark noses and dark eyes are typical of regular Staffies with white hair. White is a standard coat color in several breeds, including American Staffordshire Terriers.

How Do You Get a White Amstaff?

Abnormalities in the MITF gene, which is essential for the healthy development of pigment cells, are to blame for a Staffy’s white coat. Genetic control of the MITF protein is affected by these mutations rather than the protein itself.

There are white-coated Staffies not because the dogs can’t create pigment; instead, they do so because the skin in those areas has no pigment cells at all.

Black & White American Staffy

You often see Black AmStaffs, particularly those with chest patches of white. This combination results from the breed’s genetic mixture. The Staffy’s ancestors were English Staffordshire Terriers.

How Do You Get a Black & White Amstaff?

Only two fundamental pigments govern dogs’ colour, eumelanin (black) and phaeomelanin (red), despite the enormous variation in coat colors. These two pigments, both types of melanin, produce all color variations.

Even all white Amstaffs can have black dogs if both parents carry the dominant black gene.

Brown American Staffordshire Terrier

Brown is a standard color of the Amstaff.

How Do You Get a Brown Amstaff?

The brown alleles are B (dominant brown) and b (recessive brown). Two recessives (bb) are required to dilute black pigment to brown. The brown allele can cause dogs’ noses and foot pads with the red or yellow pigment family (phaeomelanin) to turn brown.
