How Much Sleep Do Staffies Need? [STAFFY GUIDE]

Studies have shown that dogs, including Staffies, sleep for eleven to fourteen hours out of every twenty-four. In addition, you’ll often notice your Staffy getting a few light naps in during the day as well. These sleep and napping patterns are typical of dogs; after all, what else can they do to pass the time of day?

However, there’s a massive difference between standard and unusual sleep patterns. If your Staffy starts to sleep for much more extended periods, exhibits signs of lethargy and a lack of interest in going out, it’s time to speak to your vet.

Where Should a Staffy Sleep?

Staffies should generally sleep indoors, especially if temperaments drop below 10 degrees outside. Ideally a Staffy should sleep in a dog bed or crate.

However, if you run a quick survey on Staffy owners, you would probably get several answers, ranging from in their dog crate, dog beds, on the owner’s bed (this would be favourite), in the owner’s bed, or on a couch or chair. Owners all know Staffies enjoy their comfort and love to snuggle and keep warm.

A Staffy might start on the bedroom floor only to creep onto the bed once the owners are safely asleep. Read this for more in-depth information on where Staffies should sleep.

Are Staffies Lazy?

Staffies are a combination of energetic and lazy. When you take them outside for their daily exercise, they love to run and play games; they also make excellent exercise partners. Staffies need this exercise to burn off excess energy and help maintain their muscle tone.

However, once home, they switch into their lazy mode. Staffies love nothing better than curling up on the sofa or laying in the sun and napping and even making a beeline for your lap if you let them.

How Much Sleep Do Staffies Need?

Staffies love to nap and laze about. Unlike us humans, we get most of our sleep by going to bed at night for several hours. Staffies do sleep at night unless they hear any unusual noises, then they’re likely to be up investigating. But they doze and rest for most of the day as well.

A healthy adult Staffy is likely to sleep up to fourteen hours every day. However, age, health, and activity levels will all affect how much sleep a Staffy needs.

How Much Do Staffy Puppies Sleep?

Staffy puppies will typically need several hours more sleep than adult Staffies. So you’ll probably want to add three to four more hours each day. However, when they are awake, a Staffy puppy is very active with bags of energy to burn. Puppies can be such great fun, bounding around with no “slow-down-switch,” then suddenly they can be fast asleep and happily snoring away for the next 90 minutes.

As a Staffy puppy gets older, they’ll still nap but for shorter periods. However, if they miss a nap or two during the day, they’ll try and catch up the next day.

How Much Do Staffordshire Bull Terrier Sleep?

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier loves to sleep and nap. Out and about, they are very active and burn plenty of energy, but it seems to recoup the energy expenditure they need lots of sleep and recovery naps.

Staffies develop very lovable sleeping and napping routines. The dog will determine their favourite spots for naps during the day, and they’ll have a routine for bedtime. They instinctively know when it’s time to settle down for the night.

How Much Do American Staffordshire Terriers Sleep?

AmStaffs need a lot of quality rest when they are puppies. Unfortunately, they don’t recognize this fact themselves and will continue playing until they are literally exhausted if you let or encourage them. So ensure they get sufficient rest.

As they grow into adulthood, they are similar to the Staffordshire in the amount of sleep and naps they require.
