Van Gogh is no ordinary dog — at seven years old and weighing 70 pounds, this handsome pitbull-boxer mix is truly a work of art. Not just because of his striking brindle coat and soulful brown eyes, but because of the incredible journey he’s been through and the art he creates with his own unique style.
From a Tough Past to a Brighter Future
Van Gogh’s story began in hardship. He was rescued from a brutal life as a bait dog in a dog fighting ring in North Carolina. His left ear was so badly damaged it had to be surgically amputated — a painful reminder of the cruelty he endured. Found bruised and hiding in a drain pipe, his future looked bleak until the team at Happily Furever After Rescue in Bethel, Connecticut stepped in.
Founder Jaclyn Gartner fell in love with Van Gogh’s photo online and arranged for him to be flown on a private plane from North Carolina to Connecticut. Despite his rough start, Van Gogh greeted his new foster family with a wagging tail and plenty of affection.

A Gentle Soul with a Playful Spirit
Van Gogh is the epitome of a calm, loving companion. He adores belly rubs, leisurely walks, and car rides. His foster family describes him as perfection — well-mannered, housetrained, and easygoing. Though he can be a bit nervous at first and prefers a quiet home, he loves to zoom around the yard playing and has a heart full of love to give. Van Gogh prefers to be the only pet in the home, as he is selective with other dogs and isn’t fond of cats.
Discovering His Inner Artist
Inspired by his name and unique story, Jaclyn decided to channel Van Gogh’s energy into something creative. Using a clever method, she placed paint-covered canvases inside plastic bags smeared with peanut butter. Van Gogh enthusiastically licked the peanut butter, creating colorful and abstract masterpieces with his tongue.
Incredibly, Van Gogh even created his own version of the famous Starry Night painting! His art quickly gained attention on social media, turning him into an internet sensation and helping raise thousands of dollars for animal rescue efforts.
An International Canine Art Star
Van Gogh’s paintings have been exhibited in gallery shows and sold at silent auctions, with collectors and pet product companies snapping up his unique pieces. All proceeds go directly to support Happily Furever After Rescue and help other dogs in need.
Despite his fame, Van Gogh remains a humble and loving pup, happy to share cuddles, test indestructible dog toys and create new art—always with a generous helping of peanut butter.
Happily Ever After
In June 2022, Van Gogh was officially adopted by Jessica Starowitz from Norwalk, Connecticut. Jessica says she didn’t adopt him because of his art, but because of the deep connection they felt at their first meeting. Today, Van Gogh enjoys his life surrounded by love, toys, and of course, plenty of paint and peanut butter.
Van Gogh’s story reminds us all that no matter how tough life gets, every dog deserves a chance to find joy, purpose, and a forever home filled with love.
