Sometimes, a single act of cruelty can spark a wave of hope and kindness—and that’s exactly what happened with Brixie, an 11-month-old Tennessee Staffy pup whose heartbreaking story touched hearts around the world.
In March, a shocking video went viral showing Brixie being severely beaten by her owner—simply because she ate some pizza left inside the car. The footage was painful to watch, but it ignited a powerful response. Thanks to numerous tips from concerned animal lovers, authorities quickly identified her abuser, 34-year-old Justin Johnson, who now faces a warrant for aggravated animal cruelty.

Though the justice system is still at work, Brixie has been saved from that terrible situation. Rescued by the amazing team at Tails of Hope Animal Shelter, she arrived with serious injuries—two broken hips, a deep human bite requiring 20 stitches, and several other wounds. But the shelter’s staff poured their hearts into her recovery, providing the medical care and love she desperately needed.
And last week? Brixie got to enjoy something every pup dreams of—a real pizza party! Hosted at Mellow Mushroom in Germantown, Tennessee, the event was a joyful celebration of Brixie’s healing journey and also a fundraiser to help cover her extensive medical treatments. Although she was a bit shy at first (understandably), Brixie happily devoured her pizza and spent the day surrounded by people who care.
What’s Next for Brixie?
Since her rescue, Brixie has made incredible progress. She’s been resting, healing, and undergoing treatment for Ehrlichia, an illness she was also battling. Surgery is on the horizon to fix her broken hips—with the possibility of a total hip replacement on one side—giving her the chance to live a pain-free, mobile life she so deserves.
