Breed History & Origins
Let’s start with where these breeds come from. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier—often called a Staffie—originated in 19th-century England. They were originally bred for bull-baiting but have evolved into loyal, loving family dogs.
French Bulldogs, on the other hand, have more glamorous roots. They descend from small English bulldogs brought to France by lace workers. There, they were bred with local dogs—creating the iconic, bat-eared, snub-nosed Frenchie we know today.
PHYSICAL DIFFERENCES
In terms of lifespan, Staffies typically live 12–14 years, while Frenchies usually live around 10–12 years.
Staffies are strong and athletic. They usually stand around 14 to 16 inches tall and weigh up to 38 pounds. Their muscular build and broad heads give them a powerful look.

Frenchies are smaller—about 11 to 12 inches tall, and under 28 pounds. They’ve got a stocky body, loads of wrinkles, and that trademark “bat ear” look.
Both have short coats, but Frenchies tend to have looser, softer skin—especially around the face.

TEMPERAMENT & ENERGY
Now let’s talk personality.
Staffies are often called “nanny dogs” for a reason. They’re affectionate, brave, and love being right in the middle of family life. They’ve got a lot of energy and need daily exercise and mental stimulation. Perfect for active people!
Frenchies are more easygoing and love human attention. They’re playful, cuddly, and hilarious to watch. They do enjoy playtime—but they don’t need as much exercise as Staffies. In fact, they tire out pretty quickly.
With kids and other pets, both breeds can be great—as long as they’re socialized early and properly supervised.
Typical Behaviors
Staffies are enthusiastic and thrive on interaction. If bored, they might resort to chewing or digging—but with enough stimulation, they’re a joy to have around. They’re also known for their enthusiastic greetings and love of licking!

Frenchies, on the other hand, tend to be calmer but can have a stubborn streak. They may pretend not to hear you at first—but with positive training (and treats), they usually come around.
HEALTH & CARE
Staffies are fairly robust, but they can be prone to hip problems, skin allergies, and cataracts. With good care, they often live 12 to 14 years.
They’re also quite food-motivated, and while their muscular build helps them stay fit, under-exercising or overfeeding can quickly lead to weight gain. Excess weight in Staffies can strain their joints and trigger skin issues—especially on their bellies and chests where their coats are thinner.
Note: While Staffordshire Bull Terriers have broad, short muzzles, they are not considered brachycephalic. Unlike breeds like French Bulldogs, Staffies have relatively open airways and typically don’t suffer from breathing issues related to skull structure. They may snore or pant after exercise, but they don’t face the same health risks associated with flat-faced breeds.

French Bulldogs have more health concerns. Their flat faces can lead to breathing issues, overheating, and dental problems. They’re also prone to skin infections, spinal problems, and eye issues. Most Frenchies live around 10 to 12 years.
Their low exercise tolerance combined with a big appetite makes them especially prone to gaining weight. Even a small amount of extra fat can worsen their breathing and put pressure on joints and skin folds. That’s why portion control and short, regular walks are essential.
TRAINING & SOCIALIZATION
Staffies are smart and eager to please. With structure and consistency, they train really well—and they love learning new things.
Frenchies are clever too—but more on the stubborn side. Training them takes patience, short sessions, and lots of positive reinforcement. And remember: their breathing means they can only handle so much activity at once.

WHICH BREED IS BEST FOR YOU?
So—what’s the right dog for you?
If you’re active, outdoorsy, and want a smart, playful companion—a Staffie might be the perfect match.
If you prefer a snuggly couch buddy with occasional zoomies—the Frenchie could be your best friend.
Either way, both breeds are loyal, affectionate, and love their people. Just make sure you can meet their needs—whether that’s daily runs or regular vet visits.

OUR VERDICT
So, what about Ina and me?
We both adore our dogs—each with their own unique charm.
Runa’s boundless energy fits seamlessly into my active lifestyle, and I can honestly say I would choose a Staffy again in a heartbeat.
Meanwhile, Ina is completely smitten with Tyson’s lovable personality. Tyson’s health benefits greatly from spending the entire day outdoors with Ina (who works on a horse farm), making him one of the fittest French Bulldogs I’ve ever seen. Ina shared that some of Tyson’s siblings, who live a more typical life with just a few daily walks, face serious health challenges and need frequent vet visits.
That said, Ina confided she wouldn’t choose a French Bulldog again—unless she could be absolutely sure to find a breeder who prioritizes health, focusing on better breathing, less extreme brachycephaly, and longer lifespans.
So, which breed would you choose?
