Staffy x Chihuahua: Chi Staffy Cross Breed Guide

The Staffordshire Bull Terrier or Staffy is an English dog breed that dates back to the 1800s; initially, owners used them for bull and bear baiting and, eventually, dogfights.

After these inhumane practices were outlawed, they became companion pets. The Staffordshire Bull Terrier packs a devastating punch despite its relatively small size. However, their past conflicts with their friendly, lovable personalities today.

The Chihuahua, renowned as the world’s tiniest breed of dog, is named after the Mexican state of Chihuahua, having come to the attention of visiting US citizens in the middle of the nineteenth century.

As far back as the 9th century AD., the Toltec inhabitants of Mexico developed the Chihuahua from the Techichi, a small mute dog that lived during those times.

What is a Chi Staffy?

The Chi Staffy results from crossbreeding the Chihuahua and the Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Crossing different purebred dog breeds in this way has become hugely popular, and dog breeders often refer to the resulting dogs as “hybrids” or “designer dogs.” However, even though the parents of both dogs are purebred dogs, the offspring are not considered purebred themselves.

What is a Staffy Chihuahua Cross called?

The most common name for the mix is Chi Staffy Bull; however, breeders may also decide to call them StaffyChi, Chi Staffies, or ChiStaffy.

How Long Do Chi Staffies Live?

Trying to gauge the lifespan of hybrid dogs can be complicated, mainly because some of the crossbreeds haven’t been around long enough to establish accurate details. So, the best way forward is to look at the parent breeds to gather some helpful information.

As well as having the reputation of being the world’s smallest dog breed they also have one of the longest lifespans. Chihuahuas can live between 12 and 20 years of age, with some even living beyond those years.

Staffies, on the other hand, have a shorter lifespan of 12 to 14 years, which is also not too ad for a medium-sized dog.

Based on the lifespans of the parent dogs, a Chi Staffy could live anywhere from 12 to 20 years, depending on the genes the dog inherits and, of course, the dog’s overall health.

Staffy x Chihuahua Size

It’s much the same with the Chi Staffy Bull’s size. Until the puppies are born, no one has any idea of the puppies’ genes. So once again, we need to refer to the parent breeds for some idea.

Chihuahuas are, as we mentioned, the tiniest dog on the planet and only grow between 6 to 9 inches and weigh between 2 to 6lbs. Staffies are much bigger and will grow to 14 to 16 inches and weigh between 24 to 37lbs.

The Staffy Chi will likely grow to a height of 12-16 inches and Weigh between 12-18 lbs.

Staffy Chihuahua Cross Characteristics

Several factors influence the color of the Chi Staffy Bull’s coat, particularly its parentage.  Coats can be medium in density and come in various colors, including brindle, fawn, white, red, or black, maybe long and wavy or short and smooth.

Chihuahua parents can be long or short-haired, which will definitely impact the type of coat the Chi Staffy Bull will inherit.

Staffy Chihuahua Temperament

Dog owners report that their Chi Staffy Bulls are friendly and affectionate from a young age.

Staffordshire Bull Terriers are renowned family-oriented dogs and have one of the best reputations around children of any age.

Chihuahuas are often one-person dogs if they are not well-socialised, so you will need to be aware of a potential problem there.

Obedience classes can also help a Chi Staffy Bull because both parent breeds are renowned for stubborn behaviour. Obedience and socialisation classes can also help prevent dog aggression as they get older.
