Don’t you just hate it when your Staffy needs to go to the potty, you look outside, and it’s pelting it down with rain? I know I do. I hate standing in the cold and wet, waiting for business to be concluded so we can both get back inside. But do Staffies hate rain just as much as we do?
Do Staffies Like Rain?
Staffies are no different than us humans when it comes to not enjoying being soaked with rain. Getting their feet wet can be an unpleasant prospect for dogs; they spend their entire lives indoors in a lovely warm house where they can retire to their cozy dog beds and curl up for a nice nap.
Our Staffy runs back inside the house when we open the door to take her for a walk and she sees the rain.

I can only speak generally about Staffies hating the rain and hearing other owners say their dogs hate it. But it seems to be a thing with the Staffy.
Do Staffies Like Water?
Our Staffy doesn’t mind playing in puddles but not going for a swim. A lot depends on the dog, but Staffies aren’t built for swimming. I think they intrinsically know this and steer clear of water where their paws don’t touch the floor.
I read one story of a Staffy who was so focused on following a pair of ducks, the poor dog didn’t realise they’d taken flight over a pond. Unfortunately, he chased them and ended up fully submerged. By all accounts, it was a severe shock to the Staffy’s system. I don’t know, but I’m guessing that’s one Staffy staying clear of water from now on.

Staffies are pretty smart and understand a lot more than we give them credit for. An example of this is how Staffies disappear when the word bath is mentioned. Especially if they hate water in any form, except in their bowl for drinking.
Why Do Staffies Hate the Rain?
Unless they have a natural love for the water, most dogs will avoid being out in the rain unless they are a Labrador or another water-loving breed. As previously mentioned, rainfall is typically cold, wet, and miserable, so why would any dog enjoy being out in it?
Staffies do not have sufficient insulation against cold or hot weather. The Staffy has a short, smooth coat without an insulating undercoat so, understandably, cold, wet rain doesn’t go down too well with most Staffies.
Do Staffies Need Raincoats?
Staffies definitely feel the cold, especially when the temperature drops. So there’s no harm in putting them in a raincoat. It will help retain their body heat and, of course, keep them dry. At least keep most of them dry. Once they get home, you can remove the raincoat, and you’ll only have to towel the bottom half dry.

Conclusion
It’s to be expected that your Staffy won’t be enamoured with the rain; after all, they have no undercoat, and their fur is very short. Not all Staffies are this way; some happily play in the rain and enjoy splashing around in the odd puddle. However, it’s fair to say that the Staffordshire Bull Terrier doesn’t like rain.
